My Island, My Love

My island, My Love

I'm finally here, breathing this cool tropical air

This air, so rare, comes from this breeze

It caresses the leaves as it passes through the trees

Some leaves fall in response to this wind, this breeze

That crunchy sound I hear all around as it hits the ground, is music to my ear

Nature's everywhere, I stare, who cares?

How I looked forward to this, my friend

Such bliss, all around me, it's hard to miss

Where else could I be, where else would I roam

For I know in my heart, feel it in my bones

There is no place like my love, my island home

Here where my birth was noticed, accepted, greeted

Here where my umbilical cord was dropped

Here, where from my mother's womb I came

To greet mother earth, then given a name

That sing song accent I hear fills the air

That music I hear coming from a place so long ago from our mother lands, I know

Mixing now with a people as kaiso

A sea of vibrant colors, mingled with joyous outbursts is here sweetly greeting me

With the sun gently warming my skin

This is what I silently hoped to be basking in

The beat of the drums, steel and skins

Taps of bamboo, tabla, tanggu, strings in synchronicity, echo sounds of our mother lands

Here every creed, members of the human race,  Aroma of many spices, is cooking, wafting in the air, finds an equal place

The verdant flora and fauna, this multicolor soil

This carpet of grass everywhere I pass

I'm reminded by her hills, her mountains, her oil

This profusion of nature surrounding me

Where a myriad of birds sing from their trees

Where else could I rather be

As sea, surf and turf not far away

Happily beckons me to come and play

I'm at one with this place, this voluptuous place

I looked forward to coming, seeing her

To taste her delicacies, drink her water, breath her air

To be consumed by her, everywhere

She has the liberty to touch me, touch my face

To hold me in her warmth, her embrace

God forbid when I am ready to go

I will let her know, that I love her so

I'll reunite with her just like long ago

Where from her womb I came to know

A peace is present despite much activity

I asked myself where else would I rather be

Deep in my heart as I hear it beats to the pulsating rhythms not far away

The answer I can say, wherever I may roam

This will always be my love, my home
